Intercultural romance in digital age -vanishing of "the other"
Our mission is to collect and exhibit personal experiences, to give the visual/audio/video material specifically attached to those experiences, and that should be the trigger for requestioning ourselves. We would like to see the world without cultural anxiety and people who will liberate the notion of difference from the burdon of “the other”. Supposing the internet is one of the biggest cultural changes in our civilization and supposing humanity wasn’t ready for that kind of change to happen, we decided to study and investigate only one aspect of our time – intercultural romances. We consider these relationships to be a specific and autonomous phenomenon, and we want to make a research based on the context of cultural clashing. That is the most important part of our project. Combinations of different religions, countries and continents is a natural consequence of our digital age. We want to break through the heart of our world through the most valuable art – love. There is a great potential of examining cultural barriers in this time of vibrant and nonstatical ways of living. With this exhibiton, which presents people’s personal experiences, we want to make questions – but also to offer the answers. Every single story is truthful, but also carries examples of dealing with “other” cultural backgrounds.
- Is it still safe to stick to familiarity when it comes to customs and culture?
- Do we have any resistance to „others“ when it comes to culture? How strong is that resistance?
- Does digital comunication actually reduce the distance between two people from different backgrounds?
From the '90s onwards, with the beginning of massive internet usage in all corrners of the world and opening of the countless channels of networking, the process of creating a narrative of globalization as a social imperative of bringing people closer, fighting for human rights, equality, breaking down walls, prejudices and stereotypes has begun more intensely. In the case of intercultural romances (the case of the most intimate, therefore, the most sincere one) we want to examine whether this narrative is actually becoming our reality or are we witnessing the massive hypocrisy of the 21st century ... or maybe something in between? Now let’s talk about creativity! By this project our idea is to collect personal experiences, adventures and all the colors of the colorful intercultural relationships. We also express our belief in creativity for all - everyone writes their own story, everyone can be a creator and by that has the absolute freedom in the style of their expression. The collected narratives would be presented in the form of an on-line exhibition that should create itself as an open (nonhermetic), non-hierarchical, modern museum of "mixed love". Such a collection would be a stage for dancing through the intimacy of different worlds, in order to reconsider them and to get to know the intimacy and truth about ourselves in a better light.
Idea for real exhibition: Idea about the material realization of the exhibition: Our team of curators would present the exhibition in a way that it does not come up as a simple sum of personal intercultural romantic experiences, but to create a specific, contemporary context. It is very important to our team that the truthfulness of these stories is respected. In this way the exhibiton would build up itself more than the curatorial team would have a pre-set point. Thus, the exhibition would bring together: 1. people who want to share their story, as creators of basic material; 2. curators, as organizers and core creators of the exhibition; 3. artists, who will give each story a visual artistic materiality. With this kind of exhibition, our contextual playing gets another layer of reading. The project would, through cooperation and mutual creation in a trutfulness of the artwork, result in the exhibition that is probably revolutionary in its experimentation - the transfer of authorship to the collective creation of artistic works, the breakdown of every hierarchy and quite seriously endangering the known patterns of how things are done in art and love.
